Building my kiln

Progressing from a raku kiln made out of an old oil drum to a proper full size wood kiln was rather a leap of faith, but it was one I had to make. After spending a week with Nic Collins and Sabine Nemet on their wood-firing course I set to designing exactly what I was going to build for myself. It took me many weeks to be clear of the design. Then I counted up how many bricks I would need, got some quotes and placed the order.

I’ve included a few photos of the build below. I had some help with the welding and with laying the roof arch, otherwise I worked out the design and built the kiln myself.

Designing a basic brick by brick plan. Stacking the firebricks and digging the foundations in preparation for concrete.
